“We don’t want anymore of your kind around here!” One of my neighbors had noticed my Green Bay Packers hat while I was out walking my dog. A die-hard Vikings fan, he was giving me a hard time. And I gave it right back to him. Having married a Vikings fan, I know how to live in “harmony” with them. I actually root for the Vikings when they aren’t playing my Packers.
Over the last 16 years that I have lived in ‘Vikings Territory’, I have had a lot of fun with the Viking/Packer rivalry. The two times they play each other each year are “high holy days” on my calendar. This year they are Sept 18 and Dec 24 (definitely a high holy day!) In my previous congregation, this was an opportunity to have some fun and raise some money for the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. Viking fans would donate and Packer fans would donate, and we’d see who would donate the most to world hunger. The prize varied each year. One year I was forced to wear a Vikings jersey during the game when their fans out-donated the Packer fans.
I want to issue a challenge to the good people of Greenfield and Harmony.
Sunday Night, Sept 18, is the Vikings season home opener in their brand new stadium- AGAINST THE PACKERS. It doesn’t get any better than that! Let’s wear our team colors and get together for a tailgate party in the church
parking lot before the game. And let’s donate to world hunger and have some fun doing it. I know there aren’t as many Packer fans as Vikings fans around here, but it really only takes one passionate fan with deep pockets to make a big difference. Who knows- if Vi-kings fans win the contest, we just might have to change the liturgical colors the next Sunday from green to purple! I don’t think Jesus would mind one bit!
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me. – Matthew 25:35
