The other day I read the story of the recent Little League World Series game between Oregon and Italy. Up by six runs in the top of the fifth, the Oregon pitcher walked a batter. Suddenly his coach (who also happened to be his father) came jogging out of the bullpen to address his player. What happened next was totally unexpected. The coach said, “Hey. I just came out to tell you how much I love you. As a dad, and a player — okay? You’re doing awesome out here.”
I think that’s a pretty good example of what happens in worship. We gather every seven days to be reminded again and again of God’s love for us in Jesus Christ, and that our sins are forgiven. I don’t know about you, but I need that weekly reminder. The world has a way of beating us up at times, and we are tempted to forget that God really does love us. And worship gives us the strength we need to share God’s love with others, especially those in need.
Summer is over; school is back in session. September is a good time to reconnect with our spiritual roots and renew our commitment to weekly worship. You will hear good news and go away with a renewed love for God and neighbor. See you in worship!
