September 15 is a “high holy day” on my calendar. Yup! It’s the annual Viking/Packer game. Over the last 18 years I have used this rivalry to raise money for our ELCA World Hunger Appeal. The first year I came to Greenfield we raised about $2,000. The second year I did the stinky fish challenge and we raised $3,000. Last year we raised $2,000 again. That’s $7,000 in three years! Wow! This is my last year at Greenfield before I retire and I’m wondering if we can reach $3,000 again? That would make a four year total of $10,000 for world hunger!
If any of you were here two years ago for the stinky fish challenge you know how awful the smell was. I will never do that again. But I got to thinking that maybe we could do a stinky cheese challenge this year instead. After all, Packer fans are cheeseheads. But why should the Pastor have all the fun? I’m going to invite everyone to join me in the stinky cheese challenge.
So here’s what you do. Go out and get pledges from your friends and neighbors. Tell them that if they will donate to world hunger, you will eat a piece of stinky cheese. They can donate as Viking fans or Packer fans. Then invite them to join you Sunday, Sept 15 at church for worship at 9:00 and a tailgate party from 10-12:00. Wear your team colors. We will supply brats and burgers. People will bring game food to share and a beverage of choice. At 11:30 there will be a small bite of Limburger cheese for everyone taking the stinky cheese challenge.
Raising money for world hunger and having fun doing it is something I think that Jesus would approve. In fact, we could call the event “Jesus Loves Cheeses!” (Say that out loud real fast three times.) Let’s make our goal and celebrate that God so loved the world- every one from every race and nation. And God doesn’t want anyone to be hungry on this beautiful planet we are given.
