Bible Trivia Question: What were Boaz and Jachin?
They were the two bronze pillars at the entrance to the First Jerusalem Temple built by King Solomon. You can read about it at 1 Kings 7:21. Boaz (meaning “in him is strength”) was on the left, and Jachin (meaning “God will establish”) was on the right. Boaz is thought to represent King David and Jachin to represent King Solomon. They were destroyed when the First Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in 587 BC.
Have you ever noticed the two blonde-colored brick pillars at the entrance of our church at the top of the stairs? Have you ever wondered why they were a different color? The reason is that they were meant to remind us of the First Temple built by King Solomon. And now you know their names!
As the old steps were being removed, there were concerns whether there would be proper support for our Boaz and Jachin. Not to worry. The people who built the church 106 years ago did a good job supporting them, though the steps themselves had no support. And now the new steps are going in and will be on a solid footing.
These are two good pillars to build our lives around- God will establish you in God’s strength. In other words, don’t try to do life without God’s strength. Take time for worship and acknowledge God. Receive the strength that weekly worship- Word and Sacrament- can give you.
After the steps are done, when you come for worship I hope you notice those pillars. Let them remind you where your strength comes from. See you in worship.
