There are two “high holy days” on my calendar not related to the church. They are the two times the Packers play the Vikings. This year they are Sept 16 and Nov 25. Over the last 15 years I have used one of those games as an occasion to raise money for our ELCA World Hunger Appeal. During that time we have raised over $50,000.
When I came to Greenfield, you all graciously agreed to continue that tradition of seeing which team’s fans can donate the most. The first year we raised about $2,000. Last year we raised over $3,200. I am so proud of our church.
We devote a lot of resources to meeting the local hunger needs. But hunger around the globe often goes unseen. Our church and our partners around the world help us to see the need.
On Sept 16 we will have a tailgate party after church. I, unfortunately, will be in Ireland leading a tour, but I promise to Facetime the party. I will be bringing back some fabulous prizes from Ireland, and on Sunday, Sept 23 there will be a drawing for those prizes for everyone who makes a donation to World Hunger. Do you think we can reach $4,000 this year?
Many Lutherans consider making a once a year gift to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. My hope is that you will consider doing that this year. Many organizations ask us to give. Our church is one place we can have confidence that our gifts are put to good use. Join me on Sept 16 in making a significant gift to our ELCA World Hunger Appeal this year.
